Bournemouth won 3-0 at home against Bolton to all but seal their first ever promotion to the Premier League and as soon as the final whistle blew, the madness took hold.
To fully appreciate the club’s joy, you must first understand how incredible this achievement is for them.
On the brink of financial ruin when chairman Jeff Mostyn took charge of the club in 2007, they have won promotion three times in the last five years (including each of the last two), despite points deductions and transfer bans resulting from their financial collapse that nearly dumped them out of the Football League all together. And Before all that, In 1997, they were literally collecting coins in the town center in a desperate attempt to save the club.
Now owned by Russian businessman Maxim Demin, but still playing in a 12,000-seat stadium, Bournemouth are in the top flight. After the Bolton win, the pitch at Dean Court became a sea of joyous humanity.
But no one was happier than Mostyn. First he was doused with champagne and then donned a “Premier” sombrero (huh?).
It was in the dressing room where he achieved a level of euphoria that the rest of us can’t even comprehend, though. Watch that video at the top of the post and just be thankful that such an emotion is even possible.
But before Mostyn gets too happy, Charlton’s official Twitter account reminds everyone that Bournemouth’s improbable promotion could still be thwarted.
