Ajax gave their players’ mothers a Mother’s Day (Moederdag in Dutch) to remember that culminated with the women walking onto the pitch with their sons before the club’s match against Cambuur.
The club had a fleet of Mercedes pick up the women for a chauffeured ride to a local hotel, where they were treated to a private luncheon that included a speech from Edwin van der Saar.
After that, the ladies went to the Amsterdam Arena, where they walked onto the pitch hand in hand with their sons. Their presence brought the club good fortune, too. Ajax went on to win 3-0.
And now, players from every other club will get calls from their mothers, asking why their clubs didn’t do this too. And if they’re eating enough.
