It’s been a strange and difficult season for Borussia Dortmund. Just three months ago, the players were trying to calm irate fans as the team sat at the very bottom of the Bundesliga table. But the final league match of the season — and Jurgen Klopp’s final home match with the club — proved to be a sentimental affair with a happy ending.
Having announced his decision to leave at the end of the season, fans thanked Klopp (as well as retiring, long serving midfielder Sebastian Kehl) for the two Bundesliga titles, DFB Pokal, and Champions League final appearance he delivered to them in his seven years with Dortmund.
And Klopp repaid their gratitude with a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen that means Dortmund finish seventh in the Bundesliga, which is good enough for a place in the Europa League qualifying round.
The job isn’t over yet, though. Klopp can still add to his legacy and leave Dortmund with an automatic place in the Europa League group stage with a win in the DFB Pokal final against Wolfsburg.
After all the tributes, a reporter asked Klopp if he was learning Spanish ahead of a potential move to Real Madrid. His answer (via AS): “Una cerveza por favor” (a beer please). Classic Kloppo.
