French striker Andre-Pierre Gignac has joined Mexican club Tigres, exciting and confusing fans in equal measure.
“Gignac? Wait…seriously? The French guy?” said every supporter of the three-time Liga MX champions when asked about the signing. “I mean, that’s great, but…seriously? He’s here? Weird.”
Gignac scored 21 goals for Marseille last season, the second most in Ligue 1. And if the 29 year old’s move to Mexico seems to come out of the blue, it’s because it did.
“I was playing FIFA 15 with my friends and we were talking about where I should play next season,” Gignac explained. “So my pal FrankenSteve said I should hit ‘Randomise’ on the team selection screen and join whichever club came up. It came up on Tigres, so I said ‘Why not?’ and now I’m here.”
A group of Tigres fans awaited Gignac’s arrival at Nuevo Leon Airport in Monterrey. All of them were convinced that this was “some kind of bizarre practical joke” even after he appeared. But when he explained his methodology for selecting the club, they all nodded in unison and said, “Yeah, that sounds about right.”
“So my pal FrankenSteve said I should hit “Randomise” on the team selection screen and join whichever club came up. It came up on Tigres, so I said ‘Why not?’ and now I’m here.”
Well, that could have turned out pretty awkward.
