The entire planet is currently in the midst of a Star Wars binge, so it should come as no surprise that it’s even seeped into the unveiling of new players for football clubs in Mexico.
In a move reminiscent of Napoli having Gokhan Inler appear at his unveiling press conference in a lion mask four years ago, Pachuca brought out former LA Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez in a full Darth Vader helmet and cape. He was even accompanied by other Star Wars characters as the Imperial March played in the press room.

Was this a nod to the fact that Gonzalez is a U.S. international who has now moved from MLS to Mexico, thus going to the “dark side” of his home nation’s fiercest rival? Maybe. or maybe they just thought it would be fun. Which it was. Or maybe they thought Star Wars could use a bit of extra promotion. Which it doesn’t.
Gonzalez was one of nine(!) new signings unveiled by Pachuca and they all got the Star Wars treatment from the club’s Twitter account. Here’s a sampling…

Gonzalez’s move away from the LA Galaxy, with whom he won three MLS Cups in his six years with the club, comes as something of a surprise. So to help ease the blow to fans, he wrote a nice farewell message.

The real Darth Vader wouldn’t have done that.
