John Terry has once again done what he does best: infuriate large swathes of humanity.
But that was at the end of the second half. At the start of the second half, he was the butt of jokes for many as he scored an own goal to break the scoreless deadlock between Chelsea and Everton at Stamford Bridge. Kevin Mirallas went on to score a second for Everton six minutes later, sinking Chelsea deeper into an increasingly familiar position of losing at home.
Then the Chelsea players suddenly realized that Jose Mourinho wasn’t around to take all the blame anymore and so they fought back, scoring twice in two minutes (Diego Costa 64′, Cesc Fabregas 66′).
The score held at 2-2 until the exact moment the clock struck 90 minutes, when Ramiro Funes Mori struck what any reasonable person would believe to be a death blow to Chelsea, giving Everton a 3-2 lead.
There was to be a minimum of seven minutes added time, though (keyword there being minimum), and Everton’s goal celebration pushed the match on beyond that, allowing Terry to redeem himself and get the last laugh by scoring a skillful backheel in the 98th minute from what appeared to be a clearly offside position.
Stamford Bridge erupted as Chelsea secured another home draw against a fellow bottom-half club.
After the match, Chelsea interim manager Guus Hiddink offered an unusually balanced view of the incredible finish. From Football365:
“There was seven minutes extra time, so I said, ‘Ref, okay, they are celebrating at least one minute in the corner,’” Hiddink told BBC Sport.
The Dutchman added: “I will not deny it – it was offside because Oscar touched the ball, even though John was technically perfect [with his finish].”
However, John Terry wasn’t as concerned with his positioning.
“I’m not sure, to be honest,” he said when asked if he was offside. “I’m not sure. I don’t really care.”
“I don’t really care” — the words of a man who knows how to upset his detractors as much as he possibly can.
Gotta protect Chelsea from relegation! 😉
Suarez went away, why can’t Terry just leave us in peace?? JUST GO AWAY, please.
