Unintentional burns with Lionel Messi

When asked about his relationship with Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi revealed that the two haven’t spoken since professional circumstances last required them to. But he said this in an interesting way.

From ESPNFC:

“We haven’t spoken in a long time, since the World Cup [2010] we may have crossed paths once or twice,” Messi said in Spanish on Egyptian TV. “He has his life, his things and I have mine. We haven’t spoken at all. Considering that we don’t speak to each other, I have a great relationship with him.”

Though almost certainly unintentional, that last sentence is a pretty wicked burn and amusing coming from someone like Messi, who is almost superhumanly inoffensive. It also got me thinking about some other unintentional burns Messi might say. Here are a few…

Woman films the exact moment Cristiano Ronaldo gave her a black eye with a terrible penalty

Sarah Arcand was in attendance at Real Madrid’s 4-0 win over Sevilla and happened to be sitting right behind the goal Cristiano Ronaldo was aiming for as he lined up a penalty. You can now watch more than 16 consecutive hours of Gigi Buffon making saves

Unsure what to do with yourself to make it through the tedium of the international break? Well Juventus have come to the rescue by uploading a 973-minute long video of Gianluigi Buffon making saves to celebrate his Serie A clean sheet record of the same length.

As Juve point out, at the 4:07:57 mark, the video matches the time it takes to travel from Turin to Rome by train and at 9:16:57 it lasts as long as the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Please alert your family before you start watching this video. Not that 16 hours is long enough for anyone to worry about not hearing from you, but surely they will be able to make arrangements to help you assimilate back into society after making it all the way through.

First things first, this was only a friendly. So you might want to recite that sentence after every single line of this post. That said, it’s only fitting that during a season in which Leicester City are on the verge of winning the Premier League title, England come back from 2-0 down to beat Germany at the Olympiastadion with total disregard for everything humankind knows to be true.

DTotD: Canada’s chiropractor smashes unsuspecting pitch invader

Mexico went to Canada and won 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier, which meant that the best moment of the evening for many fans in attendance was when Canada’s chiropractor absolutely leveled a pitch invader with a bone-crunching tackle from behind.

The man who made the tackle, Garret Kusch, is a former striker for the Canadian national team himself. After retiring in 2001, he became a chiropractor, which apparently involved studying exactly where to hit another person to completely incapacitate them.

Hopefully he slipped the pitch invader his business card for the spinal realignment he will inevitably need after this.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

When Johan Cruyff tributes go wrong

Paying tribute to one of the greatest legends of football shouldn’t be hard. You share one of the many images of him, say something about his wide reaching influence on the game we all love and you’ve done it. But for some this proved to be surprisingly challenging.
