Portland Timbers prove strangely oversensitive to brilliant LA Galaxy video
When memes matter more than they should
The Portland Timbers beat rivals LA Galaxy 1–0 on Sunday. Galaxy defender Jelle Van Damme was sent off in the first half after getting booked twice in three minutes when Diego Chara took a dive, avoiding Van Damme’s outstretched leg. Van Damme was not happy about this, so he tweeted a photo of people diving to express his position on the matter.
The next day, the Galaxy shared a trippy (pun intended) and spectacular video of Chara’s dive.
The Timbers were not happy about this.
What a strange and petty reaction. Not only did the Galaxy have higher attendance than the Timbers last season (with a few thousand more in capacity), but why respond at all? And if you really must, just reply with video of the perfectly executed goal that the Timbers scored before the sending off.
Remember, the Timbers won this match. It should be LA that comes out of this looking salty, but now it’s Portland. Even Twitter beefs don’t make sense in MLS.
Bruce Arena thinks MLS teams flying commercial damages the league’s reputation
As a young, rapidly growing league that seeks to position itself among the world’s best, MLS often struggles reconciling its caviar dreams with its Big Mac realities. While world famous players like David Villa and Kaka make millions, the league’s minimum salary for players under 25 years old is still just $36,500.
Given the more “average Joe” wages of the lower end of the league’s talent and the minuscule salary cap of $3.49 million per team, it might make sense that MLS clubs fly commercial — something that LA Galaxy coach Bruce Arena finds embarrassing. So embarrassing that he tells his players not to wear team apparel in airports so as not to draw attention to their commoner status.
Landon Donovan comes out of retirement after Steven Gerrard jokes about how thankful he is that Landon Donovan retired
Steven Gerrard recently did one of those videos where they put a footballer with a kid and let the adorableness of the interaction hypnotize you into wanting to buy his shirt. But after telling the child that Leicester “crap,” the kid brought up a now interesting topic: Landon Donovan’s retirement.
DTotD: Nigel De Jong introduces himself to MLS
It took five matches for him to settle in and become comfortable enough to be himself, but Nigel De Jong did his first Nigel De Jong in MLS during the LA Galaxy’s 1-1 draw with the Portland Timbers. The Dutch midfielder was only shown a yellow card for connecting with Darlington Nagbe’s ankle on a tackle that forced Nagbe to leave the match.
Breaking News: Ashley Cole is happy again
LA Galaxy defender Ashley Cole has announced that he is, in fact, happy again. As the world rejoices in this wonderful news, we can trace his path from his lowest point to his current euphoria in just three steps.
LA Galaxy delay CONCACAF Champions League trip so Steven Gerrard can watch Liverpool cup final
Steven Gerrard, a man who still looks weird in a kit other than Liverpool’s, was afraid his LA Galaxy commitments would prevent him from watching Liverpool face Man City in the Capital One Cup final on Sunday. But Galaxy coach Bruce Arena came to the rescue by rearranging the whole club’s schedule to accommodate Gerrard’s wish.
An emotional retrospective of Ashley Cole’s time at Roma
Ashley Cole’s brief spell at Roma has come to an end. With Arsenal, he won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups. With Chelsea, he won one Premier League title, four FA Cups, and a Champions League title. And with Roma, he was in that one picture where he stood an awkward distance from the rest of his teammates that became a meme.
But his time in Italy was so much more than that one image. Let’s take a fond look back on the end of an era…

Steven Gerrard misses Liverpool more than anyone has ever missed Liverpool, sounds sad
Life in Los Angeles seems to be going well enough for Steven Gerrard, but good lord does he miss Liverpool. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Gerrard made it clear that MLS isn’t fulfilling all of his professional desires.
