Real Salt Lake player throws snowball at opponent during match

When life gives you snow, make snowballs

Real Salt Lake hosted the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday in a match that started out like any other. But this being Utah in April, a blizzard soon rolled in and before long the Whitecaps’ kits matched the color of the pitch.

With the home side already up 3–0, Luis Silva entered the match in the 81st minute and hand some trouble staying on his feet as he battled for the ball with Vancouver defender Tim Parker. Cold, frustrated, and covered in snow, Silva grabbed a handful of the white powder and hurled it at Parker as he pass the ball up field.

Silva wasn’t punished for this, but bravo to Parker for not falling to the ground and screaming in diver’s pain once he realized he’d been hit.

If you want to see the progression from green to whiteout, here are the full match highlights:

Tim Howard makes incredible penalty save against Real Salt Lake

Since Tim Howard returned to MLS with the Colorado Rapids, he’s kept four clean sheets in nine starts (and conceded five goals to NYCFC), but the clearest reminder of his brilliance thus far came against Real Salt Lake on Friday. With Colorado down 2-1 in the 83rd minute, Salt Lake had a chance to finish off the game with a penalty. Howard came up with a fantastic save at full stretch, though, keeping his side in the game until the final whistle.

Salt Lake still won 2-1, but Howard stole the show with his save.

Referees trade shoes during MLS match

In the 19th minute of a match between Real Salt Lake and the Chicago Fire, play was halted and two of the referee’s assistants met in the center circle and began taking off their shoes. This, needless to say, is a strange occurrence.

Stranger still, the two men then put on each other’s shoes and returned to their positions. It seemed the linesman needed a bit more grip than his shoes were offering, so he swapped with the fourth official because, well, fourth officials could wear bunny slippers and it wouldn’t really matter. The match then continued without any further shoe swapping between the officials, who all apparently wear the same size by some remarkable coincidence.

There are many layers to the strangeness of this situation.

Inter’s Stevan Jovetic scores with backheel nutmeg to beat Real Salt Lake

With the score even at 1-1 late in Inter’s friendly against Real Salt Lake, Steven Jovetic unleashed a finishing move that even the creators of Mortal Kombat would deem too cruel.

Jovetic, a man who has now proven himself to have absolutely no chill, executed a backheel nutmeg on the goalkeeper to give Inter a 2-1 win.

Again, this was just a friendly, but Jovetic is now the owner of Real Salt Lake and all the players are legally obligated to call him “Daddy.”

Real Salt Lake score with free kick routine that will sexually arouse Arsene Wenger

Real Salt Lake opened the scoring in their 2-2 draw with Columbus by pulling off a well rehearsed and perfectly executed free kick routine that left their opponents befuddled. The ball Kyle Beckerman played off the initial free kick was just splendid.

Watch that on repeat and let all your troubles melt away.

DTotD: Real Salt Lake player goes up for a header, forgets about existence of the post right in front of him

Real Salt Lake’s Luke Mulholland was so focused on the ball while going up for a header while basically standing inside the goal that he forgot that everything else existed and jumped directly into the goal post.

The only way he could have played this off well is if he got up and demanded that the ref show the post a yellow card.

This has been the Dirty Tackle of the Day: a chronicling of unfortunate events.

Real Salt Lake player proposes to his girlfriend, then beats Toronto all on the same field
