DTotD: Brazilian defender sent off for kicking opponent in the face

Just before halftime in Saturday’s match between CRB and Bahia, defender Flavio Boaventura decided that he needed to test his leg extension after making a clearance. It just so happened that as he was doing this, Bahia striker Hernane was coming his way, resulting in Boaventura planting his studs into Hernane’s mug.

Boaventura was sent off for his poorly timed leg stretch, but CRB still came back from 1-0 down to finish with a 2-2 draw despite only having 10 men for the entire second half. Perhaps it helped that Hernane played on with his face smashed to the back of his skull.

A pair of goals from Shinji Okazaki gave Leicester an early 2-0 lead against Chelsea in the EFL Cup, but defenders Gary Cahill and Cesar Azpilicueta scored on either side of halftime to equalize for the visitors. In the second half, with survival in the competition on the line, Chelsea brought in destroyer of worlds Diego Costa and in the 89th minute, Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski was sent off for delivering a blatant forearm to Costa’s face, seemingly for no reason other than the fact that he is Diego Costa.

DTotD: Pittsburgh Riverhounds player viciously kicks opponent in the back

A Red Bulls II player who was sent off during a USL match against the Pittsburgh Riverhounds ended up having to be taken away on a stretcher after being kicked in the back. With the Red Bulls up 3-1 late in the game, a scuffle broke out, resulting in New York’s Karl Ouimette and Pittsburgh’s Romeo Parkes both getting red cards. Presumably figuring that he had nothing left to lose, Parkes kept jawing at Ouimette as he walked off before kicking him in the back like Leonidas in 300.

DTotD: Tippeligaen player sent off for shoving his own goalkeeper

In a Norwegian Tippeligaen match between Haugesund and Stromsgodset, alliterative midfielder Haris Hajradinovic conceded a penalty, angering his goalkeeper, Per Kristian Bratveit. Well, Hajradinovic didn’t appreciate Bratveit’s criticism, so he shoved him away. And when Bratveit didn’t back down, Hajradinovic shoved him in the face. This earned him a red card.

Bratveit went on to save the ensuing penalty, but Haugesund still lost 2-0. According to the Guardian, this indiscriminate violence is becoming the club’s MO. They already have two red cards and 11 yellows in their first three matches this season. Sergio Ramos could fit in nicely with them.

DTotD: Referee stands his ground after taking vicious kick

During an amateur match in Italy that appears to have been played atop all the mud in the known universe, the referee decided to show a player for Castel San Niccolo a red card. As the referee turned to walk away, the ejected player initially laughed off the decision, but then decided to act like a crazy person and savagely kicked the ref in the back of the legs.

The ref, however, absorbed the blow and remained on his feet, staring down the player like some kind of officiating Terminator. This incensed the player, who had to be carried away in hilarious fashion by a larger teammate while the ref maintained his cold as ice demeanor. An impressive display of power and restraint.

Trabzonspor player sent off for showing red card to referee who sent off his teammates

When you want to fully express how much you disagree with someone, you have to be sure you’re speaking their language so there is absolutely no chance of misinterpretation. With that in mind, Trabzonspor’s Salih Dursun picked up the referee’s red card after it was used to notify teammate Luis Cavanda that he had been the third(!) Trabzonspor player sent off and attempted to send the referee off, as well.
